boboola: learn, play, grow

Founded in 2025 by Jürgen (Joe) Schmitt and Frank Dohrmann, the EdTech startup boboola bridges the gap between traditional picture books and modern apps. With its digital Edu Books, boboola is establishing a new product category that combines narrative depth with interactive multimedia elements while deliberately avoiding the sensory overload typical of gaming apps.

The current target audience consists of children aged 4 to 7 and their caregivers (parents, grandparents, educators, therapists, etc.). The concept is based on seven learning areas, each represented by a strong character. An expansion into the children’s and young adult book sector—featuring human characters—is in the works.

Instead of fleeting “dopamine rushes,” boboola’s Edu Books deliberately focus on slowing down, educational substance, and multilingualism (technically, trilingual content is also possible). The Edu Books follow a consistent narrative structure designed to specifically promote and develop children’s attention spans. They are fully usable offline and optimized for iPads, macOS, and Android tablets. Technologically, the product is based on proven web standards such as EPUB3, XPUB, and HTML5.

The Concept

The built-in Kids Mode allows children to explore the stories and learning modules on their own, accompanied by audio. In Kids+ mode, the text is also displayed for parents to support reading aloud together. The seven subject-specific characters, the narrative design, and the consistent multilingual approach form an aesthetically and pedagogically well-thought-out overall concept that deliberately sets itself apart from the logic of the mass market and offers high-quality edutainment.

Since May 2026, boboola’s Edu Books have been available through the company’s own online shop as well as in the Apple Books Store.

The Founders

CEO and Creative Director Jürgen (Joe) Schmitt has a degree in sociology, politics and education, as well as over 30 years’ experience as an account director, designer and project manager in the agency sector.

Co-founder and co-CEO Frank Dohrmann holds a degree in economics and, in 2022, after 25 years in leadership roles within family businesses, established his own firm, Neutralis Süd Kapitalberatung GmbH. His regional work as a successful real estate agent can be found on the website dohrmann-partner.co.

Both are united by an entrepreneurial spirit, creativity, and a shared interest in socially relevant topics, art, and science.
